Doors
French doors
French doors cost roughly £1,200 to £2,950 fitted. They are a pair of hinged doors that open from the centre, usually outwards. For openings up to about two metres they are cheaper and simpler than sliding or bi-fold doors and need no track or running gear.
For a standard patio opening, French doors are often the sensible answer that nobody suggests because they are not the expensive option.

The right size of opening
French doors work best up to around 1.8 to 2 metres. Beyond that each leaf becomes large and heavy, swings a long way, and catches the wind.
If the opening is wider, you can add fixed sidelights either side of the pair to fill it while keeping the doors a sensible size. That is usually cheaper than moving to a bi-fold and keeps the simplicity.
Which way they should open
Outward-opening is the UK default and keeps the floor clear inside, but the leaves need somewhere to go and will catch a gust. Inward-opening weathers better in an exposed position but costs you floor space and dictates where furniture goes.
Walk the space before deciding. This is the choice people most often regret.
No running gear to wear out
The practical argument for French doors is that there is nothing to go wrong. No rollers, no track to fill with grit, no folding hardware. Hinges and a multi-point lock, the same as any other door.
Over fifteen years that is a meaningful difference in how much attention the doors need.
French doors: common questions
- Are French doors secure?
- A good pair uses multi-point locking on the master leaf and shootbolts top and bottom on the slave leaf. Specify an anti-snap cylinder and laminated glass, and they are as secure as any other door.
- Should French doors open in or out?
- Outward is the UK norm and keeps internal floor space free. Inward weathers better on an exposed elevation. Consider wind, the space outside and the furniture inside before choosing.
- Are French doors cheaper than bi-folds?
- Usually substantially, because there is no folding hardware or track. For an opening of around two metres they often give a better result for considerably less money.
