Doors
Aluminium doors
Aluminium doors cost around £1,400 to £2,800 fitted. The frames are slim and very strong, which allows large glazed panels and tall doors that would sag in uPVC. They suit contemporary houses and extensions, and come powder-coated in any RAL colour.
Aluminium is the material to choose when you want the door to be mostly glass, or when it needs to match aluminium windows and bi-folds elsewhere on the house.

Why aluminium handles size
Aluminium is stiff enough to hold a large glazed panel in a slim frame without needing the bulk a uPVC door would require. That makes taller-than-standard doors and full-height glazing practical where other materials start to sag or need heavy reinforcement.
It is the same property that makes it the default for bi-fold doors.
Thermal performance
Aluminium conducts heat readily, so every aluminium door sold for a UK home has a thermal break: an insulating barrier separating the inner and outer sections of the frame.
With a thermal break and a good glazed unit, an aluminium door meets the same regulatory requirement as any other material. Without one it would not, so it is worth confirming on an unusually cheap quote.
Matching across the house
The practical reason people choose aluminium is consistency. If you have anthracite aluminium bi-folds on the back and aluminium windows, a composite front door will not match the sightlines or the finish however close the colour gets.
Powder coating is done to RAL references, so matching across products from different manufacturers is realistic if you specify the reference rather than a colour name.
Aluminium doors: common questions
- Are aluminium doors cold?
- Not when thermally broken, which all current residential aluminium doors are. The older reputation comes from untreated frames that conducted heat straight through and attracted condensation.
- Can aluminium doors be any colour?
- Effectively yes, through powder coating to a RAL reference. Anthracite grey, black and off-white are the most common, and dual-colour inside and out is available.
- Do aluminium doors dent?
- They are more resistant to impact than uPVC. A sharp impact can mark the powder coating, and that is awkward to repair invisibly, so protecting the frames during other building work is sensible.
