Broken and replacement glass
Broken, cracked or inappropriate glass can be replaced in the existing frame without touching the window. Expect roughly £70 to £250 per pane depending on size and type. Glass near a door, low to the floor or within reach of a lock must be toughened or laminated by regulation.
Breakage aside, the common reasons to change glass are privacy, noise, and discovering that a pane in a critical location is not safety glass when it should be.

Making it safe first
If a pane is broken, the opening needs boarding or the glass needs removing before anything else. Cracked toughened glass can let go without warning, and a cracked pane at low level is a genuine hazard.
Most glaziers treat a broken external pane as same-day or next-day work, because the property is not secure until it is done.
Where safety glass is required
Approved Document K sets out critical locations where glazing must be toughened or laminated:
- In a door, and in the panels immediately beside it.
- Below 800mm from floor level in a window.
- Below 1500mm beside a door.
Older houses frequently have ordinary float glass in these positions. Replacing a pane is the moment to correct it, and a competent glazier will raise it.
Choosing what goes back in
A replacement is the cheapest opportunity to change the specification:
- Obscure glass for a bathroom or an overlooked window, in several patterns and privacy levels.
- Laminated glass for security near a lock, and for noise.
- Acoustic glass with asymmetric pane thicknesses, which outperforms simply adding panes.
- Low-emissivity and argon as standard on any sealed unit, for a few pounds more.
Replacement glass: common questions
- How quickly can broken glass be replaced?
- Boarding up is usually same day. The replacement pane is made to measure, so fitting typically follows within a few days, sooner for standard clear units.
- Will my insurance cover broken glass?
- Many home policies cover accidental glass breakage. Check your excess against the repair cost first, because a small pane can be cheaper than the excess.
- Can I change clear glass to obscure in an existing window?
- Yes. The unit is made to the same size with the pattern you choose and swapped into the existing frame.
